Well as most of you know on April 16th the alumni association and the actives had our spring 2005 meeting. The topic of discussion was simply, the house. We discussed the current housing structure, horrible. The future wants and needs, a new house. And possible ways to achieve our goals. The general consensus was that we would need a new chapter house, or a major overhaul of the current one. While some of the facts are less than concrete, we decided to break up into three committees to address the various concerns. We were given until Dec 2005 by the borough to have the house repaired. And honestly, less time, by our insurance company it seems. It was decided the best action was to seek a new house (most likely build on our land or new land) for our chapter’s needs, but to also look at phasing into things using our current property.
A question came out of the meeting about the use of the house for the fall 2005 school semester. The proposed idea was to section off the house into two or three parts and leave the Party room and the five singles above it usable while the rest of the house could be repaired or rebuilt. Basically knock down 2/3 of the house and rebuild it. In discussions with the borough they would have needed much time to research the stability of the property, and we would have needed our own engineers to sign off on the plan. Due to time constraints and the fear of stranding 5-7 active members in the fall without housing it was discussed and agreed Tuesday that the actives will not use the house at all in fall 2005. We wanted to be as honest with the actives, and everyone else, as possible and not get false hopes up. The actives were notified before their last meeting (april 19th) about this. So, the actives as discussed and agreed at the alumni meeting, will be renting houses starting in the fall while we all, alumni and actives, work to plan for the future.
The Current Committees:
The House Finance Committee, chaired by Dave Madl, is to look into things like restructuring items, mortgage options, land values, financing, etc.
The House Legal Committee, chaired by Jesse Shrock, is to research any borough/state legal concerns we face now or may face in the future. To help clarify rules we must meet and to see if we can avoid any pitfalls along the way.
The House Construction Committee, chaired by Brian Lindner, is to discuss land and building structure related items with the borough, research demolition options, and propose possible building locations OR structure of a new house on our property.
Each committee will have other duties as needed.
The Plans…(not set in stone) The actives rent houses and try to pay some ‘new house parlor’ type fees into a fund starting in the fall. The various committees are looking into financing, demolition of current property, possible housing options, etc… Using any financing we can get, possible sale of house/land as needed, and donation/fund raising from brothers, we will slowly build up funds needed to get a new house. Plans are still being formulated and are up for discussion. We will meet again on June 25-26th to go over things researched and to continue plans for the future of the chapter and a house. THIS IS NOT QUICK FIX PLANNING, we need to do it right even if it takes time. We are also trying to plan a Golf Outing at this same time to bring back people. The location is not set yet but most likely up in ERIE.
Also.. the Fall 2005 Alumni Weekend will be held in conjunction with Behrend’s Alumni Reunion on Friday Sept. 30 – Sunday, Oct. 2 up in Erie. Behrend is planning many family friendly events for those of you interested. The brotherhood will have its own events, meetings and such. Also Behrend is supposed to be having a wine-touring trip, which should lead to some fun times.
We are working actively on trying to communicate with as many alumni/actives as possible about this and encourage everyone to make sure we have your updated email, phone and address information and any information about other brothers you think we may not have (especially emails).
I hope to see everyone at the summer alumni meeting in June and at the fall Alumni Weekend at the end of September.
